Whales in Tenerife
Did you know that Canary Islands are the largest cetaceans observatory in Europe?
When you come to Tenerife, you can’t miss the opportunity to see whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. It’s an amazing experience.
Whales and dolphins are regularly seen a couple of miles from the cost – the whole year around! They include short-finned pilot whales, common and bottlenose dolphins.
The pilot whales are the easiest to find and most of the whale watching tour companies in Tenerife guarantee you’ll see them on their tour. They move slower than the dolphins and always stay at about 2 or 3 miles from the coast, because that’s where they find their food.
It’s an amazing story the one about what the pilot whales eat: Basically, they eat giant squids that live below hundreds meters depth – the male whales are the ones who hunt them at those incredible depths, bringing the food to the surface for their family to eat.
It’s fascinating and enriching to be on a boat, looking at the Tenerife coast on one side, and the whales on the other, and listen an experienced guide explaining how the whole ecosystem works.
Testimonial. I come to Tenerife every year and never miss the chance to see to do a trip on a sailing boat. It’s a fantastic attraction! Watching the whales and the dolphins is just great! – Robin Mackay
The dolphins are also adorable, although they are only in seen in about 40% of the trips. They move faster and always checking the fish farms of the area, looking for a nice meal.
Don’t miss the amazing opportunity of doing a whale watching tour on your next visit to Tenerife.
